From Idaho rodeo circuits to the first round of the NFL draft
In short: Before he was a cornerstone for the Chicago Bears, Colston Loveland was a rodeo participant growing up on an Idaho farm. His rapid ascent from a high school standout to a national champion and top-ten draft pick is a masterclass in athletic evolution.
Born in Goldendale, Washington, and raised in Bliss, Idaho, Loveland’s athletic foundation was built far from the bright lights of the NFL. As a youth, he competed in rodeos before shifting his focus to basketball and football. During his time at Gooding High School, he was a dominant force on both sides of the ball, serving as both a tight end and a linebacker. His senior season was particularly prolific, as he recorded 62 catches for 968 yards and 14 touchdowns, while also contributing 57 tackles and 5.5 sacks on defense.
His collegiate career at the University of Michigan was defined by record-breaking performances and championship hardware. After committing to Michigan in 2021, Loveland became a vital component of the 2023 Wolverines squad that finished an undefeated 15–0, securing the national championship. He didn't just participate; he rewrote the Michigan record books, surpassing Bennie Joppru's 2002 mark to set a new single-season record for receptions by a tight end with 56 catches.
Loveland's transition to the professional ranks was seamless. Selected tenth overall in the 2025 NFL draft, he quickly moved from a backup role to a game-changing playmaker for the Chicago Bears. His rookie season featured a historic performance against the Cincinnati Bengals, where his two-touchdown outing marked the first time a Bears rookie tight end had achieved such stats since Mike Ditka in 1961. By the end of his debut year, he had established himself as a postseason threat, setting a new benchmark for rookie tight ends with 193 receiving yards across two playoff games.
