The spectacular tour that ended before it could truly begin
In short: Celine Dion’s Courage World Tour was a masterclass in vocal power and technical spectacle. Yet, despite grossing millions and selling out arenas in minutes, the tour became a saga of postponements and cancellations driven by global pandemics and a profound personal health battle.
Launched in September 2019 to support her album Courage, the tour marked Dion's first global trek in over a decade. The production was massive, involving a team of 110 people and high-tech drone effects that recreated the Heart of the Ocean diamond. Early success was undeniable: her first 19 shows generated $33.2 million, and a four-show run in Montreal alone sold over 53,000 tickets. The tour was officially announced at the Ace Hotel in Los Angeles on April 3, 2019. This massive production even utilized drones to create images of stars and water during her performance of My Heart Will Go On.
However, the tour's momentum was repeatedly disrupted. In late 2019, a throat virus forced the rescheduling of several Montreal dates. By March 2020, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic led to the rescheduling of North American legs and later, European dates. While some postponements in Washington, D.C. and Pittsburgh were attributed to the common cold, the broader impact of the pandemic forced the tour to stretch across several years. Parisian demand was clear as 200,000 tickets for six La Défense Arena performances vanished within 90 minutes. By March 2021, the tour had reached a total revenue of approximately $104 million across 52 performances.
The narrative shifted from pandemic delays to a much more personal struggle in 2022 and 2023. Dion cancelled remaining North American and European dates, citing recovery from unspecified health issues, and eventually revealed a diagnosis of stiff-person syndrome. In May 2023, she officially cancelled all remaining European concerts, stating she would not return to the stage until she was truly ready. Despite these setbacks, the tour was recognized as the top pop tour of 2020. It also established Dion as the highest-grossing female touring act of that year.
