A royal sacrifice for love: the story of Countess Anne Dorte of Rosenborg
In short: When Prince Christian of Denmark fell for a commoner, he faced a stark choice: his royal status or his future with Anne Dorte Maltoft-Nielsen. He chose love, relinquishing his princely rank to marry her in 1971. Their life together became a captivating study in navigating royal tradition and modern reality.
Born in 1947, Anne Dorte Maltoft-Nielsen entered the public consciousness through her marriage to Count Christian, a grandson of King Christian X. Because she was a commoner, the union required the prince to renounce his royal title. Despite this formal change in status, the couple remained deeply integrated into the orbit of the Danish monarchy, frequently attending significant state events, such as the wedding of Crown Prince Frederik.
The couple’s life was defined by a blend of royal proximity and relatable humanity. From 1991, they lived within a wing of the Sorgenfri Palace near Copenhagen. Anne Dorte became a familiar figure in the media, often praised for her wit and charm. When questioned about the vast difference in their family backgrounds, she famously deflected with humor, noting that both families shared identical Christmas decorations, making it impossible to distinguish their origins.
Their marriage produced three daughters: Josephine, Camilla, and Feodora. Count Christian often expressed that he accepted the loss of his princely rank with complete equanimity. The pair remained together until Christian's death, with Anne Dorte passing away just seven months later in January 2014 at the age of 66, following a battle with throat cancer and respiratory issues. Her funeral at Lyngby Kirke drew a diverse crowd, including Queen Margrethe II and various public figures, marking the end of a life that bridged the gap between common origins and royal circles.
