From pizza delivery to metal royalty: the evolution of Courtney LaPlante
In short: Before becoming a prominent figure in modern metal, Courtney LaPlante worked as a barista and a pizza delivery driver. Her journey from these regular jobs to international success highlights a commitment to artistic independence, moving from being a substitute member in a known band to founding her own creative project.
Courtney LaPlante's rise to prominence is a study in artistic persistence and the rejection of the 'replacement' narrative. After joining the American metalcore band Iwrestledabearonce in 2012 as a last-minute substitute for a pregnant vocalist, LaPlante and her husband, Mike Stringer, spent three years touring with the group. Despite their success, they eventually chose to leave in 2015, feeling uncomfortable as placeholders for original members and seeking a unique creative identity. The transition from established band members to independent artists was not immediate. Following their departure, the couple returned to regular employment—LaPlante worked as a waitress and Stringer delivered pizzas—while they struggled to secure label funding for their own project. They eventually worked together as data entry clerks, balancing mundane labor with the slow build of their new band, Spiritbox.
They officially launched the group in October 2017, eventually releasing their critically acclaimed debut, Eternal Blue, in September 2021. LaPlante’s technical appeal lies in her refusal to adhere to traditional metalcore boundaries. While she developed an interest in death growls at age five, her modern vocal style is heavily informed by contemporary R&B artists like SZA and Doja Cat. By blending these fluid, modern textures with heavy metal influences like Meshuggah, she has been recognized by critics as a master of transitioning between screaming and singing. Her career serves as a blueprint for how diverse musical influences can redefine a genre's boundaries.
