From Belgian law student to international striker: the nomadic career of Cyriel Dessers
In short: Before finding success in the Greek Super League, Cyriel Desserek balanced university law studies with professional football. His journey through the leagues of Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, and Scotland reveals a striker capable of dominating European competitions and leading national teams.
Born in Belgium on 8 December 1994, Cyriel Dessers' early career was defined by a dual commitment to athletics and academics. While playing for OH Leuven's youth and reserve teams, he began studying law at KU Leuven. His clinical efficiency was evident early; by March 2014, he had netted 21 goals in just 21 reserve matches for OHL.
Dessers' professional trajectory saw him traverse several of Europe's prominent leagues. After stints with Belgian clubs like Lokeren and Genk, he found significant success in the Netherlands. During the 2019–20 Eredivisie season with Heracles Almelo, he was jointly awarded the top scorer title with 15 goals. His prowess extended to continental competition; playing for Feyenoord in the 2021–22 season, he became the UEFA Europa Conference League top scorer with 10 goals in 12 matches and earned a place in the tournament's Team of the Season.
His international identity is rooted in his heritage, representing the Nigerian national team through his Nigerian mother. After being called up by coach Gernot Rohr in March 2020, he made his senior debut in October 2020. His club career has continued to move across borders, from a period with Cremonese in Italy's Serie A to a notable spell with Rangers in Scotland, where he scored 22 goals in a single season. In September 2025, he transitioned to the Greek Super League, joining Panathinaikos for a reported £3.5m.
Throughout his career, Dessers has proven to be a reliable presence in high-stakes moments, from scoring crucial goals in the Scottish Cup to leading Rangers as captain during a 2025 fixture. His ability to adapt to new leagues and maintain a high scoring rate remains his professional hallmark.
