From surf champion to international rugby league star
In short: Before dominating the NRL, Damien Cook was a state champion in surf life saving. Since his professional debut in 2013, the Australian hooker has risen through the ranks to represent both New South Wales and the Australian Kangaroos, proving his elite versatility on the field.
Born in Sutherland, New South Wales, on 23 June 1991, Damien Cook’s athletic foundation was built through diverse disciplines. Despite his success in Australian Football at Endeavour Sports High School, he also won a state title at the NSW Surf Life Saving Championships while young. This physical versatility eventually translated into a professional rugby league career that has spanned multiple top-tier clubs.
Cook's professional ascent began in the junior ranks with the Penrith Panthers' NYC team in 2010 and 2011. Following stints with the Illawarra Cutters and the Canterbury Bulldogs, he made his NRL debut for the St. George Illawarra Dragons in 2013. His career reached a significant peak in 2018, a year he was named the first-choice hooker for the South Sydney Rabbitohs. That season, he achieved international recognition, playing for the Australian Kangaroos against New Zealand and Tonga, and helped New South Wales win their first State of Origin series since 2014.
His tenure with South Sydney was marked by both individual brilliance and collective struggle. In 2019, he scored a notable individual try during a New South Wales victory over Queensland. Despite a massive five-year, $4.5 million contract signed in 2018, the Rabbitohs faced varying fortunes, including a 16th-place finish in 2023. Following a stint with the Dragons, where he served as co-captain in 2025, Cook is set to transition to the Super League with the Castleford Tigers in 2027.
