From high school phenom to NFL journeyman: the volatile career of Dameon Pierce
In short: After a dominant high school career in Georgia, Dameon Pierce entered the NFL as a highly touted prospect for the Houston Texans. While his rookie season showed immense promise, a series of injuries and roster shifts have since transformed his professional journey into a complex cycle of trades, cuts, and practice squads.
Dameon Pierce’s ascent began with prolific numbers at Bainbridge High School in Georgia, where his senior year included 2,123 rushing yards and 32 touchdowns. This performance earned him a four-star recruit rating and a commitment to the Florida Gators, despite offers from major programs like Alabama and Georgia. At Florida, his production peaked during his senior season, when he recorded 574 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on 100 carries. His total high school tally reached 6,779 rushing yards and 92 touchdowns. During his first two years in college, he also contributed to the special teams unit.
His professional career launched in the 2022 NFL draft, where the Houston Texans selected him with the 107th overall pick in the fourth round. Initially named the first-string running back, Pierce enjoyed a promising rookie campaign, accumulating 939 rushing yards and four touchdowns over 13 games. However, an ankle injury sustained against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 13 truncated his debut season. His professional debut featured 11 carries for 33 yards in a 20–20 tie against the Indianapolis Colts. He later recorded a massive 75-yard touchdown run against the Los Angeles Chargers.
The following years brought significant instability. Following struggles in 2023, Pierce lost his starting role to Devin Singletary. By 2025, his role in Houston had diminished to third-stringer behind Woody Marks and Nick Chubb, leading to his release on November 20, 2025. Following a short period with the Kansas City Chiefs' practice squad, he joined the Philadelphia Eagles on a $1.29 million, one-year deal in March 2026, though his position remained unstable by August that year. After being released by the Eagles in late August, he was re-signed to their practice squad the very next day.
