How a teenage prodigy from Iceland became a record-breaking striker in Spanish football
In short: Orri Óskarsson began his professional journey as a thirteen-year-old sensation in Iceland before ascending to the top tier of European competition. His rapid development, marked by prolific scoring and high-profile transfers, highlights the evolving path of modern football talent from Nordic academies to the intensity of La Liga.
Born in 2004, Orri Óskarsson emerged from the Grótta academy in Iceland. His early career was defined by precocious success; he debuted for the senior team at just thirteen years and 354 days old. During that initial 2018 campaign, he netted three goals in three appearances, helping his side secure promotion from the third division. His development was closely tied to his family, as his father, Óskar Hrafn Þorvaldsson, served as his manager during these formative years at the club.
The striker moved to Denmark in 2020 to join Copenhagen, where he eventually made his professional debut in May 2022. His time in Denmark included a loan spell at Sønderjyske and a standout performance in the 2023–24 Champions League qualifying rounds, where he scored a hat-trick against a team coached by his father. His consistent output earned him recognition as the Danish Superliga Young Player of the Month in both July and August 2024.
In August 2024, Orri transferred to Real Sociedad for a fee of €20 million, marking a record sale for his Danish club. Despite facing physical setbacks, including a significant hamstring injury that sidelined him for about 12 weeks in late 2024, he has remained a key contributor. By April 2026, he had secured a major trophy, winning the Copa del Rey with his Spanish side. His career trajectory reflects a blend of early professional exposure and successful adaptation to the demands of elite European leagues.
