The precision of a specialist: how one kicker redefined scoring records
In short: From a record-breaking collegiate career to becoming one of the most accurate kickers in NFL history, Daniel Carlson has mastered the art of the high-pressure strike. His journey through the league's most intense moments reveals the razor-thin margin between a game-winning hero and a roster casualty.
Daniel Carlson’s ascent began at Auburn University, where he established himself as a scoring phenomenon. Under head coach Gus Malzahn, Carlson achieved a perfect record on extra point attempts throughout his collegiate career. He eventually became the all-time leading scorer in Southeastern Conference (SEC) history with 480 career points, a record that stood until 2023 when it was surpassed by Alabama's Will Reidard. His dominance was recognized with three All-SEC First Team selections and two SEC Special Teams Player of the Year awards in 2016 and 2017.
His professional transition, however, was marked by extreme volatility. After being picked by Minnesota in the 2018 NFL draft's fifth round, Carlson's first year ended when the Vikings cut him following several missed overtime field goals against Green Bay.
He was quickly signed by the Oakland Raiders on October 23, 2018, where he found stability. During that 2018 campaign, he set a Raiders franchise record by converting 94% of his field goal attempts. Carlson's peak years with the Raiders saw him co-leading the NFL in scoring during both 2020 and 2021. His 2021 season was particularly legendary, highlighted by a Thanksgiving Day performance against the Dallas Cowboys where he went 5-for-5 on field goals, including a 56-yard strike. By December 2021, he signed a four-year, $18.4 million extension, becoming the third-highest-paid kicker in the league. Today, he remains one of the most efficient specialists in the game, currently ranked as the tenth-most accurate kicker in NFL history.
