From AFL ruckman to reality star: the turbulent career of Daniel Gorringe
In short: Daniel Gorringe was a top-tier draft prospect whose professional football career was defined by persistent injury. After seven seasons and only 26 games, he pivoted to reality television and digital media, finding a new audience while candidly discussing the mental health struggles that followed his departure from the sport.
Born in Adelaide in 1992, Daniel Gorringe rose through the ranks of the Norwood Football Club, eventually becoming the starting ruckman for the 2010 Under-18 All-Australian team. His physical testing at the 2010 AFL draft combine was the best among his peers, leading Gold Coast to select him with the 10th pick in the national draft. However, his professional tenure was immediately hampered by a series of physical setbacks, including recurring ankle, hamstring, achilles, and knee injuries.
Across five seasons with Gold Coast, Gorringe played 22 games, struggling to maintain form and fitness. A failed trade attempt to Port Adelaide in 2014 forced him to return to the Suns for the 2015 season, during which he managed only two appearances. After being delisted, he signed with Carlton in 2015. His time at Carlton was similarly brief, limited to four games in 2016 before a hip injury and a subsequent achilles re-injury in the 2017 pre-season led to his retirement from the AFL.
The transition away from professional sports proved difficult, with Gorringe later revealing in 2024 that he faced severe mental health challenges and was on the brink of suicide following his retirement. He eventually found a new path in the public eye, finishing second on Big Brother Australia 12 in 2020. This exposure helped him build a significant social media presence, which he leveraged into a successful podcasting career. By September 2025, his platform, DanDoesFooty, had established him as one of Australia's most prominent sports creators.
