How a Slovenian underdog rose from the minor leagues to NBA stardom
In short: From the Slovenian minor leagues to the NBA Finals, Goran Dragić’s journey is a masterclass in persistence. Known as "the Dragon," the former All-Star and Most Improved Player transformed from a second-round draft pick into a national hero, eventually leading Slovenia to their first major international title.
Goran Dragić’s ascent began in the Slovenian minor leagues with KK Ilirija in 2003, when he was just 17 years old. After moving through the top-level Slovenian and Adriatic leagues with Slovan and Union Olimpija, he entered the 2008 NBA draft. Though selected 45th overall by the San Antonio Spurs, his rights were immediately traded to the Phoenix Suns, setting the stage for a career defined by high-stakes performance.
Dragić’s impact in the NBA was most visible during his tenure with the Suns and Miami Heat. In 2014, he achieved a rare statistical feat, joining the 20-50-40 Club by averaging over 20 points per game while shooting at least 50% from the field and 40% from three-point range. That same year, he was named the NBA Most Improved Player and earned a spot on the All-NBA Third Team. His ability to perform under pressure was highlighted in a 2010 playoff game where he scored 23 of his 26 points in a single quarter to lead a comeback against the Spurs.
Beyond individual accolades, Dragić became a cornerstone for his home nation. He led the Slovenian senior national team to its first-ever FIBA EuroBasket title in 2017, earning the tournament's MVP honors. By reaching 10,000 NBA points, he became the first Slovenian player to achieve that milestone. His career has since spanned numerous franchises, including the Rockets, Raptors, Nets, and Bulls, cementing his legacy as one of Slovenia's most significant basketball exports.
