From Alabama championships to NFL stardom and a controversial suspension
In short: Daron Payne transitioned from a five-star recruit at Alabama to a dominant NFL defensive tackle. After securing national championships and earning a massive $90 million extension, his career has been marked by both elite performance and high-stakes disciplinary moments on the field.
Born in Birmingham, Alabama, on May 27, 1997, Daron Payne rose through the ranks as a highly touted five-star recruit. During his tenure with the Alabama Crimson Tide, he became a cornerstone of their defense, securing national championships in 2015 and 2017. His junior year in 2017 was particularly notable, as he earned defensive MVP honors in both postseason games, including a Sugar Bowl performance where he scored an offensive touchdown following an interception.
Payne entered the professional ranks in 2018, selected 13th overall in the first round by the Washington Redskins. His immediate impact was evident during his rookie season, where he recorded 56 tackles and five sacks, earning a spot on the 2018 PFWA All-Rookie Team. His financial trajectory reflects his elite status; after being placed on a franchise tag, he signed a significant four-year, $90 million extension with the Washington Commanders on March 13, 2023.
Despite his statistical success, Payne's career has faced turbulence. In 2025, he was involved in a high-profile altercation with Detroit Lions player Amon-Ra St. Brown, which resulted in a one-game suspension without pay. This decision drew criticism because St. Brown received only a fine for a similar strike. Beyond the field, Payne has demonstrated remarkable resilience, such as playing through a dislocated thumb during the 2024–25 postseason to help his team secure a Wild Card victory.
