The man who turned Texas football into a national powerhouse
In short: Before Darrell Royal took the helm, the University of Texas suffered its worst season ever with a 1–9 record. Within just two years, he transformed the Longhorns into a top-four national contender, establishing a dynasty that would secure three national championships and define an era of winning football.
Royal's tenure in Austin began on December 18, 1956. He inherited a struggling program and immediately pivoted toward success, leading the team to a 6–4–1 record in 1957 and a Sugar Bowl berth. By 1959, they were ranked fourth in the nation. Over his 20-year head coaching career at Texas, he amassed a 167–47–5 record, winning more games than any other coach in the program's history. His teams secured three national championships (1963, 1969, and 1970) and 11 Southwest Conference titles.
While his success was undeniable, Royal's methods were complex. He was known for a run-heavy philosophy, often associated with the idea that passing carries too much risk. His coaching tactics even drew scrutiny in Gary Shaw’s 1972 exposé, "Meat on the Hoof." Furthermore, his approach to diversity was shaped by the era's constraints. A 1959 internal memo revealed Royal's initial reluctance to recruit Black players due to concerns over housing and social friction among white teammates.
The transition toward integration occurred gradually. In 2005, Royal reflected on how slowly things changed in his region during that time. A scholarship was ultimately granted by him to Julius Whittier, marking the initial instance of a Black student-athlete joining the Longhorns football squad. Beyond the field, Royal was a man of distinct personality, known for "Royalisms"—motivational sayings about effort and luck—and a personal life that included close ties to figures like Willie Nelson.
