In short: Before he was a Hall of Fame icon, Lee Roy Selmon was the youngest of nine children on an Oklahoma farm. He transformed from a collegiate powerhouse into the cornerstone of an expansion franchise, proving that true dominance on the field could be paired with a quiet, scholarly grace.

Lee Roy Selmon's rise to prominence began at the University of Oklahoma, where he joined his brothers Lucious and Dewey on the defensive line in 1972. By 1974, he had emerged as a dominant force, anchoring one of the most formidable defenses in the school's history. His collegiate career was marked by elite success, including two consecutive national championships in 1974 and 1975. For his individual brilliance, he earned the Lombardi Award and the Outland Trophy in 1975, leading to a ranking by College Football News as the 21st-best player in the history of the sport.

In 1976, Selmon was the first overall pick for the expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His impact was immediate; he secured both the Rookie of the Year and MVP honors in his debut season. Despite joining a struggling franchise that had lost its first 26 games, Selmon became the team's backbone. He led the Buccaneers to three playoff appearances between 1979 and 1982 and was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1979. His physical presence was so imposing that coaches compared his maturity to a seasoned professional operating among amateurs.

Beyond the gridiron, Selmon was a scholar-athlete who transitioned into significant leadership roles. He served as the athletic director for the University of South Florida from 2001 to 2004, where he launched the school's football program and oversaw major infrastructure growth. His 1995 entry into the Pro Football Hall of Fame marked a milestone, as he was the initial individual honoured mostly for his success within Tampa Bay. His legacy is cemented in multiple halls of fame and even in the geography of Florida, where an expressway bears his name.
