In short: In 1985, Leslie Frazier helped lead the Chicago Bears to Super Bowl glory. But a devastating knee injury during that very championship game ended his playing career, forcing him to reinvent himself as one of the NFL's most respected defensive architects.

Leslie Frazier’s professional journey began unexpectedly. After an impressive collegiate career at Alcorn State University—where he set a school record with nine interceptions during his sophomore season—he went undrafted in 1981. Despite this, the Chicago Bears signed him just days later. He quickly rose from a special teams player to a starter, eventually leading the Bears' defense with six interceptions during their historic 1985 Super Bowl XX championship season.

However, the physical toll of the game arrived at the peak of his success. During the second quarter of Super Bowl XX, a punt return resulted in a catastrophic knee injury. The damage, diagnosed by Dr. Bill Clancy, involved tears to the anterior cruciate, posterior cruciate, and medial collateral ligaments, along with a fractured bone under the kneecap. Although he attempted a comeback, the injury prevented a full recovery, and he was released by the Bears in August 1987.

Frazier pivoted to coaching, beginning with a nine-season tenure building the program at Trinity College. His ability to improve defensive units became his hallmark. As defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals, he helped increase takeaways from 24 in 2003 to 36 in 2004. Later, with the Indianapolis Colts, he assisted in moving the passing defense from 15th in 2005 to second in 2006. Between 2010 and 2013, he directed the Minnesota Vikings, achieving a 10–6 standing and securing a postseason spot during his second complete season.

Throughout his career, Frazier has been a sought-after specialist, serving in high-level roles for the Eagles, Ravens, Buccaneers, and Bills. As of 2024, he continues his influential career as the assistant head coach for the Seattle Seahawks.
