The man who nearly broke Germany's scoring record with 43 points
In short: David Krämer’s journey from a Slovakian birthplace to the pinnacle of European basketball is a masterclass in steady progression. While he navigated the grueling tiers of German basketball and NBA developmental leagues, his career reached a historic peak on an international stage where he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with legends.
Born in Myjava, Slovakia, to a professional basketball player father, Krämer’s path was shaped by early mobility. His family moved to Austria, where he began playing at age four and joined the Oberwart Gunners youth ranks alongside his brother, Filip. Despite his Slovakian roots, his heritage is a blend of Serbian and German descent, eventually leading him to represent Germany on the international stage.
Krämer’s professional ascent was defined by tactical development. After making his debut in Austria at 17, he moved to Germany's ratiopharm Ulm system. To sharpen his skills, he spent significant time with affiliate teams like Weißenhorn Youngstars (now OrangeAcademy). This 'slow-burn' approach paid off in the 2016–17 season when he won the league's best young player award, averaging 15.4 points per game while leading his team to a title.
His career took him across continents, including an NBA Summer League stint with the Phoenix Suns and time in the G League with the Northern Arizona Suns. After moving through various top-tier European clubs like FC Bayern München and Granada, he joined Real Madrid in 2025. However, his most historic individual moment occurred during a EuroBasket 2025 qualifier on November 23, 2024.
In an overtime loss against Sweden, Krämer exploded for a career-high 43 points. This feat remains one of the most significant scoring performances in German basketball history; it stands as the second-highest total ever recorded by a German national team player, surpassed only by Dirk Nowitzki’s 47-point performance during the 2006 World Championship.
