From high jump champion to NFL star: the versatile career of David Njoku
In short: Before becoming a prominent NFL tight end, David Njoku was a national high jump champion. This explosive athleticism has defined a professional career marked by high-stakes contracts, significant injuries, and a remarkable resilience that saw him transition from the Cleveland Browns to the Los Angeles Chargers.
Born on July 10, 1996, to Nigerian parents of Igbo heritage, Njoku’s path to professional football was paved by elite-level athleticism. Prior to excelling at the University of Miami, his jumping ability was proven when he took the 2014 New Balance Nationals Outdoor title. This explosive capability translated to the NFL, where he was a highly touted prospect, ranked as the second or third best tight end available depending on the analyst.
The Cleveland Browns drafted him during the first round of the 2017 NFL draft, bringing high hopes for his career. His rookie season saw him record 32 catches and four touchdowns. Over his tenure in Cleveland, he navigated a series of physical challenges, including a concussion and broken wrist in 2019, a knee injury in 2020, and a high-ankle sprain in 2022. Despite these setbacks, he secured a massive four-year, $56.75 million contract extension in May 2022.
Beyond the field, Njoku’s life has been marked by both cultural honor and unexpected hardship. During the 2022 offseason, he received a title as a Nigerian chief within his home village of Umuozu, Imo State. Conversely, in September 2023, he faced a life-altering freak accident at home while lighting a fire pit, resulting in burns to his face and arms. This experience led him to become a supporter of the American Burn Association. After announcing his departure from the Browns in February 2026, he joined the Los Angeles Chargers in May 2026.
