The odyssey of a 7-foot center across three continents
In short: Tibor Pleiß represents the ultimate journeyman's path in professional basketball. From his early days in German junior leagues to the bright lights of the NBA and elite European clubs, his career is a masterclass in navigating the complex global ecosystem of high-level sports.
Pleiß began his journey in Germany, debuting for RheinEnergie Köln (later Köln 99ers) at just 17 years old in 2006. His early development was marked by steady progression through the German Bundesliga and participation in major junior international tournaments, including the FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship in 2007. By 2009, he had already broken into the senior German national team for EuroBasket.
His professional trajectory took a significant turn toward Spain in 2012 when he joined Saski Baskonia. After two years there, he moved to FC Barcelona in August 2014. However, his ambitions led him to seek entry into the NBA. His draft rights were shuffled through three different teams—the New Jersey Nets, Atlanta Hawks, and Oklahoma City Thunder—before finally landing with the Utah Jazz in February 2015.
Pleiß's NBA tenure was brief but notable; he debuted for the Jazz on October 30, 2015, and set career highs against the Memphis Grizzlies in January 2016. Following a quick trade to the Philadelphia 76ers where he was waived just five days later, Pleiß returned to dominate the European circuit. He spent years with prominent clubs like Galatasaray, Valencia Basket, and Anadolu Efes, where he stayed for six seasons.
In a full-circle narrative, Pleiß recently signed with Panathinaikos in early 2025 before returning home to Germany in December 2025 to join Rasta Vechta. His career spans over 13 seasons of elite competition, illustrating the diverse paths available to top-tier athletes in a globalized sport.
