The striker who set a record for Northern Ireland
In short: David Healy is the all-time leading scorer for Northern Ireland, boasting 36 goals. His clinical finishing once placed him on a shared European Championship qualifying record alongside Robert Lewandowski, a feat only recently surpassed by Romelu Lukaku. From Manchester United's youth ranks to professional management, his career is a testament to longevity.
Born in Killyleagh in 1979, Healy's journey through professional football began in the Manchester United academy. After signing as a professional in 1997, he made his first-team debut in the League Cup against Aston Villa in October 1999. His early years were marked by prolific scoring in youth and reserve squads, including a season where he finished as top scorer for United's B team with 25 goals in 1996–97. He first appeared for the senior side in a 2–0 victory against Wigan Athletic. His professional journey included a brief loan spell at Port Vale during his early years at Old Trafford.
Healy's career saw him move through several high-profile clubs. He joined Preston North End in 2001 for £1.5 million, becoming their Player of the Year after scoring 15 goals in 42 matches during the 2003–04 season. He later played for Leeds United, Fulham, Sunderland, and Rangers. At Rangers, he contributed to an SPL title in 2010–11 and a League Cup victory in 2011. He also had stints on loan at Norwich City and Doncaster Rovers. His time at Ibrox included a victory in the 2011 League Cup final.
His international success is perhaps his most enduring legacy. With 36 goals, he remains Northern Ireland's most prolific striker. During a UEFA European Championship qualifying campaign, he scored 13 goals, a tally that shared the record for the highest scoring performance in a single campaign with Robert Lewandowski until Romelu Lukaku surpassed it. After retiring from playing in November 2013 due to ankle injuries, he transitioned into management, leading Linfield to multiple NIFL Premiership titles. He eventually moved into coaching, starting his managerial tenure with Linfield in 2015. During his time there, he achieved a domestic treble in the 2016–17 season.
