From childhood hardship to NFL stardom, David Montgomery remains defined by his unique resilience.
In short: Before becoming an NFL standout, David Montgomery navigated a childhood marked by economic instability in Cincinnati. Today, the Houston Texans running back is known as Knuckles for his physical power, a nickname reflecting his journey from an Eagle Scout to a professional athlete who balances elite performance with community service.
Born in 1997, Montgomery’s path to the NFL was unconventional. Growing up in Cincinnati, he faced significant adversity, including frequent moves and periods without basic utilities. Despite these challenges, he excelled as a dual-threat quarterback in high school, where he recorded 6,666 rushing yards and 91 touchdowns. His discipline extended beyond the field, as he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, a commitment he maintains today as an ambassador for Scouting America.
After a standout collegiate career at Iowa State, where he broke the national record for forced missed tackles in 2017, Montgomery was drafted by the Chicago Bears in 2019. He quickly established himself as a durable, versatile back. His time with the Detroit Lions proved particularly transformative; alongside teammate Jahmyr Gibbs, he formed a powerful rushing tandem dubbed the two-headed monster. The duo made history as the first pair of teammates to each reach 1,000 yards from scrimmage and 10 touchdowns in a single season.
Beyond his athletic achievements, Montgomery is noted for his distinct personal choices and character. He adopted a vegan diet in 2020 and has been recognized for his philanthropic efforts, including his work with children facing health challenges and disaster relief. In 2025, his dedication to scouting was honored with the North Star Award. Now with the Houston Texans, Montgomery continues to be recognized for his strength and his ability to overcome obstacles, both on and off the gridiron.
