The man with the shortest scoring career in England's history
In short: Most players dream of a lifelong international career. For David Nugent, the dream was perfectly, albeit briefly, realized. In just eleven minutes of play, he achieved a statistical rarity: a one-cap, one-goal record that remains unmatched in the annals of the England national team.
In March 2007, David Nugent was called into the England senior squad by Steve McClaren to replace the injured Darren Bent. At the time, Nugent was making waves in the lower leagues, having transitioned from a Liverpool youth academy player to a professional standout at Bury. His arrival in the national setup was historic; he was the first Preston North End player to represent England since the legendary Tom Finney forty-nine years earlier. His rise was fueled by a change in position that allowed him to flourish within Bury's Youth and Centre of Excellence department. He had previously been part of the Liverpool youth academy before departing at age 15.
Nugent’s international tenure was defined by a single, high-impact appearance. He came on as a sub late in a Barcelona-based UEFA Euro 2008 qualifier versus Andorra on 28 March 2007. In the 93rd minute, he tapped in a shot from Jermain Defoe to secure a 3–0 victory. This single moment left him with a unique legacy: a 11-minute career consisting of exactly one cap and one goal. Following this performance, he expressed great pride in his unique one-cap, one-goal statistic. He had previously been a regular for the England under-21 side, scoring against nations such as Moldova and Switzerland.
Beyond this brief international flash, Nugent enjoyed a prolific club career across the English leagues. He found significant success at Leicester City, where he was the club's top scorer for two consecutive seasons in 2012–13 and 2013–14, helping them secure the Championship title. His journey took him through clubs including Portsmouth, Burnley, Middlesbrough, and Derby County. Even after a period of retirement, the striker returned to the pitch in late 2025 as a player-coach for Anstey Nomads. During his time at Middlesbrough, he helped the team earn promotion to the Premier League. His later years included a stint at Tranvere Rovers on loan during the 2020–21 season.
