From juggling balloons to guarding the net for Canada and Inter Miami
In short: Before becoming a professional goalkeeper, Dayne St. Clair spent his childhood in Scarborough juggling balloons when a soccer ball wasn't available. Today, the Canadian international has risen from a collegiate standout to a Major League Soccer star, securing his place among the elite in the professional ranks.
Raised in Pickering, Ontario, by a mother from Scotland and a father from Trinidad, St. Clair's path to professional soccer was unconventional. In his early youth, he functioned primarily as a central defender. However, his preference for staying on the pitch rather than sitting on the bench led him to volunteer as a goalkeeper whenever his team's regular keeper was unavailable. This determination saw him commit to the position full-time at age 14.
His collegiate career at the University of Maryland marked a significant turning point. After a redshirt year in 2015, he became a regular starter in 2017. His standout performance culminated in the 2018 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament, where he recorded five consecutive clean sheets and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player for defensive excellence. This success paved the way for his professional career.
St. Clair entered Major League Soccer via the 2019 SuperDraft, where he was selected seventh overall by Minnesota United FC. His tenure in Minnesota included a period of development through loans to Forward Madison FC and San Antonio FC, eventually leading to a breakout run where he earned MLS All-Star selections and the 2025 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Award. He currently plays for Inter Miami and represents the Canada national team, having been named to the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.
His international journey has been defined by intense competition, notably with Maxime Crépeau for the Canada starting role. Since Jesse Marsch took over as head coach, St. Clair has become a vital component of the Canadian defense, recording seven clean sheets in 12 starts through mid-2026.
