From NBA stardom to the streets: the turbulent life of Delonte West
In short: Delonte West once played alongside LeBron James and stood as a standout in the NBA. Yet, the former professional athlete's journey has been defined by a harrowing battle with mental health, legal struggles, and a descent into homelessness that captured the world's attention.
Born in 1983, West's early life was marked by poverty and the challenges of being a target for bullying due to his mixed heritage. His struggles with mental health began in middle school, following a leg injury that led to self-harm and substance abuse. By his teen years, he had faced multiple suicide attempts and spent time in children's hospitals.
Despite these obstacles, West achieved significant athletic success. He played for Saint Joseph's University, where he helped the Hawks achieve a 27–0 regular season in 2003–04. He was selected 24th overall in the 2004 NBA draft by the Boston Celtics. His professional career included stints with the Seattle SuperSonics, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Dallas Mavericks, as well as international play in China.
His career was complicated by health and legal issues. In 2008, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, though he later questioned the diagnosis, attributing his struggles to depression and the stresses of professional sports. Legal troubles also surfaced, including a 2009 arrest involving multiple firearms and a 2010 suspension for weapons charges.
By 2016, West's decline became public when photos of him panhandling went viral. While he denied being homeless, his precarious situation was highlighted when Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban intervened in 2020, paying for his rehabilitation and providing a hotel room. Despite these efforts, West has continued to face instability, including further arrests in 2022.
