The striker who turned down a fortune to stand by his principles
In short: In 2011, Demba Ba faced a pivotal choice. As West Ham faced relegation, he could have accepted a lucrative salary and bonus to stay in the Premier League. Instead, he triggered a release clause, choosing a path that would lead him from the heights of Chelsea to the Chinese Super League.
Demba Ba's career was defined by both clinical finishing and unexpected volatility. After a prolific spell at TSG Hoffenheim, where he scored 40 goals in 103 appearances, his departure in January 2011 became a point of contention. Ba claimed Hoffenheim reneged on a transfer to a Premier League club, leading to a standoff where he refused to attend a winter training camp. The club responded by threatening legal action and fines, eventually agreeing to a transfer to Stoke City for a reported £7.1 million, though the deal collapsed after Ba failed a medical.
His subsequent move to West Ham United saw him become the club's top scorer for the 2010–11 season, despite playing only 12 games. Following West Ham's relegation, Ba demonstrated significant conviction by turning down a £50,000-a-week salary and a £500,000 bonus to remain in the Premier League, opting instead to sign for Newcastle United on 17 June 2011. At Newcastle, he became a sensation, scoring 16 goals in the 2011–12 season and being voted the best signing of the year by Premier League managers.
Beyond the pitch, Ba's career was marked by his religious convictions. As a practicing Muslim, he refused to wear Newcastle United's sponsor, Wonga.com, because it was a payday loan firm. He also famously auctioned his Chelsea jersey to finance the Collective against Islamophobia (CCIF) in France. His professional journey eventually concluded in September 2021, following a final stint in Switzerland with FC Lugano, after a career that spanned the top leagues of France, Germany, England, Turkey, China, and Switzerland.
