From the French sixth tier to matching Lionel Messi's scoring record
In short: In 2013, Denis Bouanga was playing in France's sixth-tier Division d'Honneur. Fast forward to 2025, and the winger has climbed the global ladder to tie with Lionel Messi for MLS goals, establishing himself as one of the most prolific attackers in the league.
Bouanga's ascent was far from linear. After being released by Le Mans FC during his youth, he began his senior career at Mulsanne in the sixth tier. His talent was quickly evident when he became the top scorer in the Ligue de Maine during the 2013–14 season with 26 goals. This performance earned him a move to the top flight with Lorient, where he would eventually amass 136 Ligue 1 appearances across clubs like Nîmes and Saint-Étienne.
His transition to Major League Soccer in 2022 marked a definitive turning point. Signed by Los Angeles FC for a $5 million fee, Bouanga immediately impacted the league, helping his side secure both the Supporters' Shield and the MLS Cup in his debut year. His clinical nature in front of goal was further cemented in 2023 when he claimed the MLS Golden Boot and became the most prolific African goalscorer in top-tier matches, netting 40 goals—surpassing even Mohamed Salah's 36.
On the international stage, Bouanga has become a cornerstone for Gabon. Since his 2017 debut, he has represented his nation at multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. While his international journey has seen highs, such as winning consecutive Man of the Match awards in 2017, it has also faced significant turmoil, including the indefinite suspension of the Gabonese national team by their sports ministry following a disappointing 2025 tournament performance.
