From Stockholm's youth academies to a ten million euro transfer to Galatasaray
In short: Born in Sweden to a Turkish father and Swedish mother, Deniz Gül's ascent through European football is a masterclass in rapid progression. After dominating Swedish youth leagues, he navigated high-profile moves through Portugal to become a centerpiece of Turkish football's biggest stage.
Deniz Gül's journey began in the Swedish club system, playing for local sides like Stuvsta IF and moving through various youth levels including AIK and IF Brommapojkarna. His breakthrough came at Hammarby IF, where he joined the academy in 2021. By 2022, he had established himself as a premier talent, winning the P19 Allsvenskan as both the league's top scorer and the Forward of the Year.
His professional trajectory accelerated quickly. After a productive 2023 season with Hammarby TFF, where he netted 14 goals in 22 matches, he moved to the Portuguese giants FC Porto in August 2024. During his tenure in Portugal, Gül demonstrated his ability to perform on the continental stage, scoring in the UEFA Europa League against Bodø/Glimt and making his Primeira Liga debut with a goal against Arouca.
Despite representing the Swedish U19s in 2023, Gül made a significant international decision on 6 November 2024, choosing to represent Turkey despite having earned a dozen caps for Sweden. This transition led to his senior call-up by Vincenzo Montella in March 2025 for the UEFA Nations League play-offs. He secured global recognition after netting a goal versus Spain during 2026 World Cup qualifying, which led to his inclusion in the 26-man 2026 FIFA World Cup roster.
The culmination of this rapid rise arrived on 1 September 2026, when Turkish Süper Lig giants Galatasaray announced negotiations for his transfer. The move involved a €10,000,000.00 fee and a five-year contract, marking a significant moment in the modern era of Turkish club transfers.
