How a German-born footballer navigated a complex web of dual identities and nationalities
In short: Born in Germany to a German father of Iranian descent and a Galician mother, Dennis Eckert's career is as multifaceted as his heritage. From the German youth ranks to representing Iran on the world stage, his journey highlights the intricate intersection of sport, citizenship, and administrative hurdles.
Dennis Eckert Ayensa, known professionally as Dennis Dargahi, has built a career defined by movement and shifting allegiances. This diverse background has granted him German and Spanish citizenship, and while he is fluent in German, English, and Spanish, his knowledge of Persian remains minimal.
His professional trajectory saw him rise through the Borussia Mönchengladbach youth system before making his senior debut for their reserve team on 5 September 2015. After stints in Spain with Celta de Vigo and the Netherlands with SBV Excelsior, he found significant success in Germany with FC Ingolstadt. During his time there, he scored 14 goals in 30 league matches in one season, helping the club reach the promotion play-offs and eventually securing a place in the 2. Bundesliga.
Eckert's most decorated period arrived with the Belgian side Union SG, where he secured a Belgian Cup title on 9 May 2024 and a Belgian Super Cup title on 20 July 2024. However, his international career has been complicated by bureaucracy. Despite receiving his Iranian citizenship by May 2026, he faced administrative hurdles and a lack of FIFA approval that prevented him from debuting for the Iran national team during friendly matches in March 2026. Despite being included in Iran's 2026 FIFA World Cup roster on 1 June 2026, he had yet to secure required FIFA Change of Association clearance.
Currently playing for Standard Liège following a loan move in September 2024, Eckert's career serves as a modern example of how globalized talent moves through the footballing ecosystem, often navigating complex legalities to represent their ancestral roots.
