The man who replaced a legend and survived the Motown era
In short: When David Ruffin was fired from The Temptations, his friend Dennis Edwards was drafted to take his place. It was a transition marked by stage invasions, legal battles, and a career that spanned the heights of Grammy glory and the depths of personal struggle.
Dennis Edwards joined The Temptations in 1968, stepping into the void left by the departure of David Ruffin. The transition was famously turbulent; Ruffin attempted to reclaim his position by crashing the stage during Edwards's lead vocals on "Ain't Too Proud to Beg." This disruption lasted roughly one month before the group permanently moved forward with Edwards, especially after Ruffin failed to appear for a scheduled engagement in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
Edwards's tenure coincided with some of the group's most significant musical shifts. Under producer Norman Whitfield, the band embraced psychedelic soul, producing hits like "Cloud Nine," which earned a 1969 Grammy Award, and "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" in 1972, which won four Grammys. However, the era was also marked by internal friction. Edwards faced dismissal in 1976 due to what member Otis Williams described as an "intolerably attitude," fueled in part by escalating cocaine use.
Beyond the group, Edwards maintained a complex solo career and personal life. In 1984, he achieved solo success with the duet "Don't Look Any Further," featuring Siedah Garrett. His personal history included a high-profile engagement to Aretha Franklin—who cited him as the inspiration for her 1972 song "Day Dreaming"—and a brief marriage to Ruth Pointer of the Pointer Sisters. Despite legal disputes over the use of the Temptations name, Edwards continued performing with his own group, The Temptations Review, until his death in February 2018.
