In short: Dennis Erickson’s coaching career was defined by a lifelong competition with his childhood neighbor, Mike Price. From high school quarterback battles to competing for the same head coaching jobs across multiple states, their intertwined paths created one of the most enduring and complex narratives in college sports.

The rivalry began in Ferndale and Everett, Washington. As teenagers, Erickson was a starting quarterback at Everett High while Price coached nearby. The two were fierce competitors on the field; notably, as a junior, Erickson beat out Price for the starting role. This early friction set the stage for a career where they would constantly vie for the same positions in the coaching ranks.

The professional tug-of-war continued for decades. In 1981, Price won the head coaching job at Weber State College over Erickson. Years later, Erickson beat Price to the Washington State University position in 1987. The cycle repeated in 1989 when Erickson moved to the University of Miami; he notably recommended Price as his successor at Washington State, even allowing Price to rent his home in Pullman.

Despite their professional proximity, they often found themselves on opposite sides of the scoreboard. During Erickson's tenure at Idaho, he went 2–2 against Price’s Weber teams. Later, while coaching at Oregon State, Erickson secured a 2–1 record against Price’s Washington State squads. This history highlights a unique dynamic: two friends and neighbors who spent forty years navigating the same career ladder, often trading roles and titles.

Erickson eventually achieved massive success, including winning two national championships with Miami (1989 and 1991) and maintaining a .650 record at the college level. His journey from an undersized quarterback to a powerhouse coach was paved by these constant interactions with Price, illustrating how personal history can dictate the trajectory of professional achievement.
