A rivalry of pupils and mentors spanning over a century of football
In short: In 1946, two legendary coaches met on the field: one a master strategist, the other his former star quarterback. This wasn't just a game; it was a high-stakes chess match between a mentor and his most illustrious pupil, sparking a rivalry that defined Southern college football.
The Georgia Tech–Tennessee rivalry is a cornerstone of American college football, stretching back to their first meeting in 1902. That inaugural matchup in Atlanta was a gritty affair, played in darkness and drizzling rain, where Tennessee secured a 10–6 victory after two Georgia Tech touchdowns were ruled illegal. While the series has seen many eras, it is defined by the intense personal connection between Robert Neyland and Bobby Dodd. Neyland, known as the 'old Gray Fox,' coached Dodd, who had been a standout quarterback for Neyland's Tennessee teams from 1928 to 1930.
When the series resumed in 1946 after a 35-year hiatus, the stakes were personal. Dodd, who had been denied a scholarship at Tennessee, was now leading Georgia Tech. The two men faced off several times, with Dodd eventually compiling a 2–2 record against his former mentor. Their matchups were often high-profile, such as in 1956, when a victory for Tennessee in a top-tier matchup catapulted the Volunteers to #1 in the AP poll.
The rivalry has been marked by significant shifts in power and unexpected upsets. Tennessee has historically held the upper hand, leading the series 26–17–2. The programs experienced a long hiatus following 1987, only to reunite in 2017 for the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game. As the series continues to evolve, the two programs are scheduled to meet again in a home-and-home series, with games set for Atlanta in 2026 and Knoxville in 2027.
Beyond the coaches, the series has produced legendary statistical feats. In 1905, Georgia Tech's John Heisman led the Yellow Jackets to a 45–0 victory over Tennessee, a score that remains the largest margin of victory and highest point total in the history of the rivalry.
