How one player became the highest-paid safety in NFL history
In short: Derwin James has navigated a career defined by elite production and grueling physical setbacks. From a five-star recruit to a cornerstone of the Los Angeles Chargers, his journey involves massive contracts, significant surgeries, and a relentless ability to return to the field.
Derwin James Jr. entered the NFL in 2018 as a highly touted prospect. After a standout collegiate career with the Florida State Seminoles, where he transitioned from a backup to a starter, he was selected by the Los Angeles Chargers in the first round, 17th overall. His early professional years were marked by immediate impact; as a rookie, he earned First Team All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl selection, recording 105 combined tackles and three interceptions.
However, his trajectory has been frequently interrupted by injury. James has faced several significant medical hurdles, including a lateral meniscus tear and cartilage damage in 2016 that required surgery, a stress fracture in his right foot in 2019 that sidelined him for months, and a torn meniscus in 2020 that forced him onto season-ending injured reserve. Despite these setbacks, his defensive efficiency remained high, with Pro Football Focus grading him as the fifth-best player in his position during his first four seasons.
The financial scale of his talent is reflected in his contract history. In August 2022, James signed a four-year, $76.53 million deal, making him the highest-paid safety in NFL history at that time. He achieved this milestone for a second time on May 26, 2026, when he signed a three-year, $75.6 million extension. This sustained value is evidenced by his consistent presence in the Pro Bowl, earning five career nominations and multiple Defensive Player of the Month honors.
