The defender who was famously impossible to beat
In short: In an era of legendary strikers, one man stood as an immovable object. Known for his incredible speed and anticipation, Des Walker became a defensive icon, once prompting manager Brian Clough to sing, 'You'll never beat Des Walker!' Discover the remarkable career of England's fastest path to 50 caps.
Desmond Sinclair Walker's ascent to footballing greatness began with a twist of fate. After being released from Tottenham Hotspur's youth system following a dispute over a haircut, he was signed as an apprentice by Nottingham Forest in 1980. Under the tutelage of Brian Clough, Walker made his professional debut in March 1984 at just 18 years old.
During his first spell at Forest, Walker became a cornerstone of a highly successful side. He played in seven Wembley cup finals, securing five victories. His individual dominance was reflected in his accolades: he was named Forest's player of the year three times and earned four consecutive selections for the PFA Team of the Year. His defensive prowess was so profound that even legendary striker Gary Lineker included him in his career 'best One to Eleven'.
On the international stage, Walker achieved a historic milestone, becoming the fastest player in history to reach 50 England caps, a feat completed in just over four years. He was a vital component of the England squad that reached the 1990 FIFA World Cup semi-finals, where his performances were compared to those of the great Bobby Moore. While his career saw transitions to clubs like Sampdoria in Italy and Sheffield Wednesday in England, his reputation as a 'stopper' with unmatched recovery speed remained his defining characteristic.
Despite his defensive mastery, Walker's scoring record was remarkably sparse. A specialist in defensive cover rather than attacking set pieces, he scored only one goal in approximately 800 senior professional appearances, a lone equaliser against Luton on New Year's Day 1992.
