In short: Led by the charismatic Sayid Muhammed Abdullah Hassan, the Dervish movement sought to unify Somali clans against British, Italian, and Ethiopian colonial expansion. Through strategic guerrilla warfare and shifting alliances, they maintained an independent state until a final, massive aerial assault brought their long, bloody rebellion to an end.

The Dervish War emerged in 1899 as a direct response to the encroaching colonial interests of Britain, Italy, and the Ethiopian Empire. Sayid Muhammed Abdullah Hassan, a religious leader who founded his own brotherhood, sought to transcend traditional clan divisions by uniting Somalis under the banner of the daraawiish. His movement was fueled by opposition to Christian missionary activity and the aggressive territorial expansion of Emperor Menelik II, who had begun raiding Somali-inhabited regions like the Ogaden in the 1890s.

Between 1900 and 1920, the British launched five major military expeditions to crush the rebellion, often struggling against the Dervishes' superior mobility in the harsh bush terrain. Despite suffering significant losses—including the near-annihilation of a British detachment at Gumburu in 1903—the Dervishes proved resilient. They utilized the Nugaal Valley as a stronghold and, at times, leveraged support from the Ottoman and German Empires during the First World War to bolster their arsenal. The conflict was devastating for the region, with estimates suggesting that one-third of Somaliland's population perished.

The movement's fortunes shifted dramatically following the end of World War I, which left the Dervishes isolated without their international allies. In 1920, the British launched a decisive combined arms offensive. The Dervish capital at Taleh, which had served as the heart of their embryonic state, was subjected to aerial bombardment and subsequently captured. This final defeat effectively dismantled the Dervish movement, concluding a 21-year struggle that remains a pivotal chapter in the history of anti-colonial resistance in the Horn of Africa.
