From a high school sweetheart to the ultimate football nomad
In short: Desmond Ridder's professional path serves as a study in athletic resilience. After guiding Cincinnati to historic postseason success, his career transformed into a rapid sequence of trades and practice squad assignments. He has navigated five different organizations across three years, illustrating the volatile nature of modern football depth charts.
Ridder’s path to the pros was marked by early adversity and significant accolades. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, he was raised by his mother and grandmother before starring at St. Xavier High School. Despite being a two-star recruit by Rivals.com, he secured a scholarship to the University of Cincinnati after an impressive tryout for offensive coordinator Zac Taylor during his junior year. At Cincinnati, Ridder became a standout dual-threat, earning AAC Offensive Player of the Year honors twice and leading the Bearcats to the first-ever playoff berth for a Group of Five team in 2021.
His entry into the NFL was defined by a notable draft discrepancy. While many experts projected him as high as the eighth overall pick (first round), he fell to the third round, being selected 74th overall by the Atlanta Falcons. His tenure in Atlanta was volatile; he spent much of his rookie year as a backup to Marcus Mariota before taking over the starting role in December 2022. However, his time with the Falcons was characterized by frequent coaching shifts and depth chart fluctuations, leading to a trade to the Arizona Cardinals in March 2024.
Since 2024, Ridder has navigated a complex series of transactions that highlight the precarious nature of NFL backup roles. He moved from the Cardinals' practice squad to the Las Vegas Raiders, then briefly joined the Cincinnati Bengals and Minnesota Vikings before landing with the Green Bay Packers in late 2025. Throughout this nomadic period, he has consistently been utilized as a situational substitute or practice squad depth, illustrating the thin margins between being an active roster player and a career journeyman.
