How an Ohio standout became the anchor of the Detroit Lions
In short: From a four-star recruit to a cornerstone of the Detroit Lions, Taylor Decker’s career is defined by remarkable durability and high-stakes transitions. Discover the journey of a player who played nearly every snap of his rookie season and navigated major contract extensions and unexpected injuries.
Taylor Decker’s path to the NFL began at Butler High School in Vandalia, Ohio, where he was a three-year starter and a multi-sport athlete playing both football and basketball. Initially committed to the University of Notre Dame, he eventually transitioned to Ohio State University. His collegiate career was marked by rapid progression: after playing primarily on special teams as a true freshman in 2012, he became a starter in 2013. By his junior year in 2014, he was the only returning starter on the Buckeyes' offensive line, eventually helping lead the team to a 2015 College Football Playund National Championship victory over Oregon.
Selected 16th overall in the 2016 NFL draft, Decker entered the professional ranks with a significant four-year, $10.96 million fully guaranteed contract. His rookie season was a testament to his reliability; alongside quarterback Matthew Stafford, he was the only player to play every offensive snap for the Lions. This performance earned him a spot on the PFWA All-Rookie Team and the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association's Rookie of the Year award.
Decker's tenure in Detroit was characterized by both immense value and physical challenges. While he secured massive extensions, including a five-year, $70.35 million deal in 2020, his career included periods on injured reserve due to shoulder surgery in 2017 and finger surgery in 2021. He also famously played through the start of the 2020 season with appendicitis. After a decade of service, including 145 games started and multiple division titles, Decker requested his release in March 2026, marking the end of a significant era for the franchise.
