In short: In 2022, the Cleveland Browns traded massive draft capital and signed Deshaun Watson to a record-breaking $230 million guaranteed contract. The move, intended to secure an elite quarterback, instead resulted in significant legal controversy, poor on-field production, and severe salary cap constraints that have left the franchise struggling to recover.

The 2022 transaction between the Houston Texans and the Cleveland Browns involved sending Watson to Cleveland in exchange for three first-round picks, a third-round pick, and two fourth-round selections. The deal was immediately followed by a five-year, $230 million contract, which at the time set a new benchmark for guaranteed money in the league. However, the acquisition was clouded by numerous civil lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct against Watson, leading to an 11-game suspension and a $5 million fine during his first season with his new team.

On the field, the results were catastrophic for Cleveland. Watson’s performance declined sharply compared to his tenure in Houston, where he had once led the league in passing yards. Between 2022 and 2023, his passer rating dropped to 81.7, ranking near the bottom of the league for qualified quarterbacks. His physical health also deteriorated, as he suffered season-ending injuries in both 2023 and 2024, including a second rupture to his right Achilles tendon in January 2025 that sidelined him for the entire 2025 season.

The trade’s legacy is further complicated by the success of Baker Mayfield, the quarterback the Browns moved on from to make room for Watson. After being traded to the Carolina Panthers and eventually joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Mayfield achieved Pro Bowl status and led his new team to consecutive division titles. Meanwhile, the Texans utilized the draft picks acquired from Cleveland to build a competitive roster, including selecting Defensive Rookie of the Year Will Anderson Jr. By 2025, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam publicly admitted the trade was a significant failure.

Beyond the statistics, the decision severely damaged the franchise's public image and financial flexibility. The rigid contract structure has created long-term salary cap issues, limiting the team's ability to sign free agents or retain talent. Analysts frequently compare the deal to the infamous Herschel Walker trade, noting that the combination of lost draft assets, massive financial commitment, and the ethical backlash from fans has potentially set the organization back by several years.
