From undrafted free agent to record-breaking NFL starter
In short: He arrived in the NFL without a draft selection, yet eventually commanded the field. Jake Browning’s journey from a high school record-breaker in California to a pivotal figure for the Cincinnati Bengals is a masterclass in persistence and sudden, historic performance.
Jake Browning’s ascent began with unprecedented dominance at Folsom High School. During his senior year, he established a national record with 91 touchdown passes and set California state records for passing yards. His collegiate career at the University of Washington followed a similarly high trajectory. As a sophomore, he led the Huskies to their first conference championship since 2000 and earned the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year honors, finishing sixth in the 2016 Heisman Trophy voting.
Despite this pedigree, Browning’s professional path was anything but linear. Entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Minnesota Vikings in 2019, he spent years navigating the fringes of rosters, moving between practice squads and reserve contracts. After stints with the Vikings and a period on the Cincinnati Bengals' practice squad, he finally earned a significant opportunity when Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow suffered a season-ending wrist injury during the 2023 season.
Browning’s transition to the starting role produced moments of historic efficiency. During his early starts, he achieved an 86.5 percent completion rate, the highest ever recorded for a quarterback in their first or second career starts. He notably led the Bengals to a victory over his former team, the Vikings, marking the first time a Bengals signal-caller had won three of his first four starts since the era of Boomer Esiason. While his tenure as a starter faced challenges, including a high interception rate during heavy losses, his ability to step into the spotlight remains a defining chapter of his career.
