The man who mastered comedic timing in the golden era of Bollywood
In short: Deven Verma was more than just a funny face on screen. A versatile performer who transitioned from a student of sociology to a celebrated award-winning actor, he became a cornerstone of Indian cinema through his collaborations with legendary directors like Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Gulzar.
Born on 23 October 1937 in Kutch, Deven Verma grew up in Pune, the son of Baldev Singh Verma and Sarala Devi. His upbringing was shaped by a family deeply connected to the industry; his father worked as a film distributor. Verma pursued higher education at Nowrosjee Wadia College for Arts and Science, where he studied from 1953 to 1957, eventually graduating with Honours in Politics and Sociology.
It was during his college years that he chose to simplify his original name, Devendu Verma, to Deven. This period of self-definition preceded a prolific career in Indian cinema. While he is most celebrated for his comedic timing in Hindi films, his talent extended to Marathi and Bhojpuri productions as well. He became a favorite of esteemed Bollywood directors, including Basu Chatterji, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, and Gulzar.
Verma's mastery of comedy was formally recognized by the Filmfare Best Comedian Award on three distinct occasions. He secured the honor in 1976 for his role in Chori Mera Kaam, again in 1979 for Chor Ke Ghar Chor, and a third time in 1983 for the film Angoor. Beyond acting, he also ventured into production and direction, notably with the film Besharam.
His personal life was also intertwined with cinematic royalty; he married Rupa Ganguly, the daughter of veteran actor Ashok Kumar. Deven Verma passed away in Pune at 2 a.m. IST on 2 December 2014, following a heart attack and kidney failure.
