From a football dynasty to the NFL, the rise of Devin Bush Jr.
In short: Born into a legacy of professional football, Devin Bush Jr. transformed from a highly touted college star into a dominant force on the field. His journey through the Michigan Wolverines and the NFL is marked by massive tackles, high-stakes trades, and a relentless pursuit of defensive excellence.
The lineage of Devin Bush Jr. is deeply rooted in the NFL. His father, Devin Bush Sr., played safety in the league from 1995 to 2002 and was a first-round pick in 1995. Following this path, the younger Bush emerged as a standout at the University of Michigan. After rejecting a scholarship from Florida State in 2015, he committed to Michigan, where his father eventually joined the coaching staff as a defensive analyst in 2016.
During his collegiate career, Bush earned a reputation as a punishing hitter. In 2017, he led the Big Ten in sacks and tackles for loss during the season's opening games, eventually earning consensus All-American honors. By 2018, he was a team captain and the Nagurski–Woodson Defensive Player of the Year. His performance was so impactful that he opted to enter the 2019 NFL Draft early, bypassing his senior season and the Peach Bowl.
The 2019 draft saw the Pittsburgh Steelers select Bush with the 10th overall pick, a move achieved through a significant trade involving multiple draft picks from the Denver Broncos. Bush's professional career has seen highs and lows, including a dominant rookie season where he recorded a fumble return touchdown and an interception in a single game. Despite facing injuries, such as a torn ACL in 2020, he has continued to find success, later signing notable contracts with the Seattle Seahawks, Cleveland Browns, and most recently, the Chicago Bears.
