How a broken nose tested the grit of a rising soccer star
In short: In a high-stakes match against Costa Rica, Diego Luna faced a brutal injury that could have ended his night. Instead, he played through the pain, proving to his manager that he possessed the mental toughness required to compete at the highest level of international soccer.
Diego Luna, an American attacking midfielder born in Sunnyvale, California, to Mexican parents, has rapidly ascended through the ranks of professional soccer. After beginning his organized training at age five with the Palo Alto Soccer Club, Luna navigated elite youth systems, including the San Jose Earthquakes and the Barcelona Residency Academy in Arizona. His professional journey began in earnest on April 5, 2021, when he signed with USL Championship side El Paso Locomotive.
Luna's resilience became a defining narrative during a match against Costa Rica in early 2025. During the first half, an opponent's elbow broke his nose, leaving him bloodied and requiring cotton to be shoved up his nostrils. Despite the injury, Luna continued playing until halftime, providing an assist to Brian White before seeking hospital treatment. His performance earned high praise from US manager Mauricio Pochettino, who lauded his character and toughness.
The midfielder's impact on the pitch has been significant. After a $250,000 transfer to Real Salt Lake in June 2022, Luna has become a key figure for both club and country. He has been a vital part of the United States youth national teams, notably helping the U20 side win the 2022 CONCACAF U-20 Championship. This win guaranteed the squad spots for both the 2024 Olympics and the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup. As of August 2026, Luna has recorded 27 goals for Real Salt Lake, cementing his status as a premier talent in Major League Soccer.
