How a near-transfer to Real Madrid shaped a Spanish striker's career
In short: In the summer of 2000, Diego Tristán was on the verge of joining a powerhouse like Real Madrid. Instead, a presidential exit changed his trajectory, leading him to a legendary spell at Deportivo de La Coruña where he became one of Europe's most feared attackers.
Born in La Algaba on 5 January 1976, Diego Tristán Herrera emerged from the youth ranks of Real Betis to become a prolific striker in La Liga. His career reached a significant peak during his six-year tenure at Deportivo de La Coruña. During the 2001–02 season, he was the league's top scorer, earning the Pichichi Trophy after netting 21 league goals. That prolific campaign saw him score a total of 32 goals across all competitions, including a hat-trick in a 5–0 victory over his former club, Mallorca.
Tristán's ascent was nearly different; he almost moved to Real Madrid in the summer of 2000, but the deal was blocked by the exit of club president Lorenzo Sanz. Instead, he joined Deportivo, where he formed a potent attacking partnership with the Dutchman Roy Makaay. However, his momentum was frequently interrupted by physical and personal challenges. An ankle injury sustained while on international duty in 2002 saw him lose his starting position to Makaay, who went on to win the European Golden Boot.
Despite these setbacks, Tristán's talent was undeniable. He earned 15 caps for the Spanish national team, making his debut on 2 June 2001, and appeared in the 2002 World Cup. His career later took him through various clubs, including a stint in Serie A with Livorno and a period in the Premier League with West Ham United, where he scored his first goal as a substitute against Stoke City in late 2008. He eventually returned to his native Andalusia to play for Cádiz in 2009.
