In short: Born Mark Lizotte, the Australian rock icon known as Diesel adopted his famous moniker almost by accident. While fronting a band in Perth, a friend jokingly dubbed the group Johnny Diesel and his little injectors. The name stuck, eventually becoming a permanent fixture of his long and celebrated musical career.

Born in Massachusetts in 1966, Mark Lizotte moved to Australia with his family in 1971. Growing up in a musical household—his father was a professional saxophonist—Lizotte eventually gravitated toward the electric guitar. By his mid-teens, he was performing in various local bands, including Innocent Bystanders. In 1986, he formed Johnny Diesel & the Injectors, a group that blended R&B, blues, and Southern rock. The band's name was initially a lighthearted reference to bassist John Dalzell, who had one child and another on the way. When a venue owner needed a name for an advertisement, Lizotte offered the joke name, which unexpectedly became the band's identity.

The band relocated to Sydney in 1987, where they caught the attention of Jane Barnes, wife of rock singer Jimmy Barnes. This connection proved pivotal, leading to a long-standing professional and personal relationship between Diesel and Barnes, who became brothers-in-law after Diesel married Jane's sister in 1989. The band's self-titled debut album reached No. 2 on the Australian charts, and by 1990, they had sold over 280,000 copies. Despite this success, Diesel chose to pursue a solo career in 1991, launching with the single Love Junk.

As a solo artist, Diesel achieved significant commercial success, with his albums Hepfidelity and The Lobbyist both reaching No. 1 on the Australian Recording Industry Association charts in 1992 and 1993, respectively. Throughout his career, he has won multiple ARIA Music Awards, including three consecutive wins for Best Male Artist between 1993 and 1995. His work has spanned diverse styles, from blues and rock to folk-influenced Americana. By 2012, he had expanded into television scoring, and in 2022, he hosted a documentary series exploring pivotal concerts by Australian artists, cementing his status as a versatile and enduring figure in the Australian music industry.
