How a sheltered upbringing led to the birth of moombahton
In short: Before he was a global electronic music force, Dillon Francis lived a remarkably disciplined life. Raised with strict rules—including mandatory Sesame Street viewing before television—this Los Angeles native would eventually transform the dance floor by blending house rhythms with heavy, new genres.
Born in Los Angeles on October 5, 1987, Dillon Francis experienced a highly regulated childhood. The son of an American alternative medicine practitioner and a Serbian-Croatian mother, Francis describes his early years as quite sheltered. His upbringing was so structured that he did not encounter profanity until he was 15 years old.
This disciplined foundation eventually gave way to a career defined by genre-bending experimentation. After studying at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, Francis briefly attended Santa Monica College before moving to Atlanta with just $500 to pursue music. He eventually returned to Los Angeles, where he began developing the sounds of moombahton and its heavier descendants, such as moombahcore and EDM trap.
His rise to prominence was fueled by key industry connections and chart-topping successes. After being discovered by producer Diplo, Francis released the Swashbuckler EP in 2010. By February 2012, his EP 'Something, Something, Awesome' made history as the first moombahton release to hit number one on the Beatport charts. His discography has since spanned various labels, including Mad Decent and Columbia Records, and includes diverse projects ranging from the Spanish-language album 'Wut Wut' to the pop-punk project 'Sorry My Love' launched in 2025.
Beyond the decks, Francis has explored comedy and even television, appearing on Taskmaster US and creating content for Funny or Die. His career has been marked by both massive collaborations with artists like Skrillex and Calvin Harris, and personal reconciliations, such as his 2025 reunion with DJ Snake after a six-year period of estrangement.
