The high-stakes gamble of a basketball star who skipped the draft workouts
In short: In 2012, Dion Waiters bypassed all NBA pre-draft workouts, relying solely on a promise from a lottery team. From a fourth overall pick to an NBA champion, his career has been defined by sudden scoring bursts, physical struggles, and unexpected personal hurdles.
Dion Waiters’ ascent to the NBA was unconventional. Despite not playing a single minute of high school basketball, he committed to Syracuse University after his freshman year. By the time he finished his senior years at Life Center Academy, he was a highly-ranked recruit, placed as the 15th best overall prospect by ESPNU and the second-best shooting guard in the ESPN 100. This momentum culminated in the 2012 NBA draft, where the Cleveland Cavaliers selected him fourth overall—a move that surprised scouts because Waiters had played zone defense and had not been a starter in college.
His professional journey was marked by extreme highs and significant physical and personal challenges. During his rookie season, Waiters faced persistent issues with a sprained ankle and loose knee cartilage, causing him to miss 20 games. While he achieved individual milestones, such as scoring 33 points against the Sacramento Kings in 2013, he also faced scrutiny. In 2015, while playing for the Oklahoma City Thunder, he faced intense media backlash after elbowing Manu Ginóbili during a playoff game against the San Antonio Spurs.
The latter part of his career saw a series of suspensions and health battles. In 2019, while with the Miami Heat, Waiters faced multiple suspensions, including a 10-game ban following a panic attack triggered by THC-infused edibles. After a hiatus from the league to deal with depression, Waiters sought a professional comeback with private workouts in 2023. Despite the turbulence, his career reached a pinnacle in 2020, when he secured an NBA championship as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers.
