From third-tier striker to league champion in a single season
In short: Dion Drena Beljo’s rise in professional football is a masterclass in rapid progression. Moving from the Croatian third tier to scoring 31 goals in his debut season for Dinamo Zagreb, his career trajectory highlights how quickly elite talent can find its peak on the European stage.
Born in 2002 and named after Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, Dion Drena Beljo began his journey in the youth ranks of Cibalia. His early development was marked by immediate impact; during the 2018–19 season in Croatia's third tier (Druga NL), he recorded ten goals and nine assists. This prolific output helped secure promotion to the Prva NL, establishing him as a rising prospect in the Croatian football pyramid.
Beljo’s career has been defined by high-volume movement across various leagues. After moving to NK Osijek and spending time on loan with Istra 1961—where he appeared in 34 league matches and scored 15 goals—he made a significant jump to the German Bundesliga. In January 2023, FC Augsburg signed him for a €3 million fee. He quickly adapted, scoring his first goal for the club against SV Werder Bremen just two weeks after his debut.
The most striking chapter of his career occurred in 2025. After a loan spell with Rapid Wien in Austria, Beljo returned to Croatia to sign with Dinamo Zagreb. His impact was instantaneous: he scored 31 league goals in his first season, playing a pivotal role in the club securing its 26th Croatian league title. This rapid ascent from regional youth football to becoming a primary goalscorer for one of Croatia's most successful clubs illustrates a remarkable pace of professional growth.
Beyond his club success, Beljo has integrated into the national team setup. He received his first senior call-up in June 2023 for the UEFA Nations League Finals and made his official debut for Croatia in October 2023 during a qualifying match against Turkey.
