From Porto prodigy to European campaigner: the career trajectory of defender Diogo Leite
In short: Born in Porto in 1999, Diogo Leite has navigated a decade of professional football across Europe. From his early development in Portugal to securing Champions League qualification in Germany and his recent move to Italy, Leite has consistently adapted to the tactical demands of elite leagues as a reliable centre-back.
Diogo Filipe Monteiro Pinto Leite began his journey at FC Porto, joining the club's youth academy at age nine. His professional ascent was rapid; by August 2017, he was featuring for the reserve side. His breakthrough into the first team occurred in July 2018, when manager Sérgio Conceição drafted him into the squad for the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira. Leite proved his worth immediately, helping the team secure a 3–1 victory. His performance in the Primeira Liga that August was strong enough to earn him the league's Defender of the Month award.
Following a loan spell at S.C. Braga, where he made 34 appearances, Leite moved to 1. FC Union Berlin in July 2022. This period marked a significant chapter in his career, as he played 40 games during his debut season and helped the club reach the UEFA Champions League for the first time. His consistent defensive work led to a permanent transfer for €7.5 million. He remained with the Bundesliga side until his contract concluded in June 2026, eventually signing a two-year deal with SS Lazio in September 2026.
Leite's international career has been marked by steady progression through the youth ranks. He earned his first under-21 cap for Portugal at age 19 and later featured in the 2019 UEFA European Championship play-offs. While he was included in the extended list of players considered for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, he has yet to make a senior international appearance, having remained an unused substitute during the 2024 UEFA Euro qualifiers. His trophy cabinet includes the 2016 UEFA European Under-17 Championship, where he was also named to the tournament's best squad.
