From the streets of Merseyside to the heights of Hollywood stardom
In short: Before he was a global television icon, Dominic Purcell was a student of the craft in Australia. His journey from an English birthplace to international fame involves a complex heritage, a brush with a life-threatening accident on set, and a connection to one of modern entertainment's most famous families.
Born on 17 February 1970 in Birkenhead, Merseyside, England, Dominic Haakon Myrtvedt Purcell possesses a rich, tripartite identity. His lineage is a blend of English-Norwegian heritage from his father, Phil Myrtvedt, and Irish roots from his mother, Maureen. This heritage granted him automatic British and Irish citizenship, while his later move to Australia in 1972 eventually led to his naturalisation as an Australian citizen.
Purcell's path to acting was shaped by his time in New South Wales, moving from Bondi to Penrith as a child. He refined his skills at the Australian Theatre for Young People and later the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, where he notably studied alongside fellow actor Hugh Jackman. These formative years provided the foundation for his breakout roles, most notably as Lincoln Burrows in the hit series Prison Break, which ran from 2005 to 2009 and returned in 2017.
His career has been marked by both high-profile roles and significant personal challenges. He became a staple of the DC television universe, playing Mick Rory, also known as Heat Wave, across The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow between 2014 and 2021. However, his professional life has not been without peril; in June 2016, a heavy iron bar fell on his head during a Prison Break production in Morocco, necessitating an emergency airlift from Ouarzazate to Casablanca to treat nasal fractures and other severe injuries.
In his personal life, Purcell's relationships have often been in the public eye. Following a marriage to Rebecca Williamson that lasted from 1998 to 2008, he has been linked to several notable figures, including AnnaLynne McCord. Most recently, he married Tish Cyrus, mother of Miley Cyrus, in an August 2023 ceremony in Malibu, California, following an engagement announced in April 2023.
