In short: From a 9–0 rout in 1931 to a deliberate own-goal in 1994, the Barbados national football team has navigated a century of Caribbean competition. Their journey is defined by historic upsets, technical controversies, and a persistent quest to break into the world's elite.

The Barbados national football team, governed by the Barbados Football Association since 1910, officially joined FIFA and CONCACAF in 1968. While they have never qualified for the FIFA World Cup or the CONCACAF Gold Cup, their history is marked by significant regional milestones. They achieved their first international victory on April 20, 1929, defeating Trinidad and Tobago 3–0. However, the early years were also defined by heavy losses, including a 9–0 defeat against British Guiana in 1931.

The late 20th century saw the 'Bajan Braves' experience both high-drama victories and infamous controversies. In 1976, they fought a grueling three-match tiebreaker against Trinidad and Tobago for World Cup qualification. Perhaps more bizarre was the 1994 Caribbean Cup qualification against Grenada, where Barbados purposefully scored an own-goal to force overtime and secure advancement. The team also saw a historic peak on July 16, 2000, when they defeated Costa Rica 2–1 at home, though they ultimately failed to progress past the second round of the 2002 World Cup qualifiers.

Modern history has been a mix of technical hurdles and competitive growth. In 2011, the team faced a unique setback when a victory over Aruba was awarded to the opponent because Barbados fielded an ineligible player, Hadan Holligan. Despite these obstacles, the team remains a consistent fixture in the Caribbean Zone, recently participating in the CONCACAF Nations League and continuing to represent the island on the international stage.
