From Villanova standout to NBA record-breaker: the rise of Donte DiVincenzo
In short: He was once tasked with impersonating a rival on the scout team. Now, the man known as 'Big Ragu' holds franchise records and NBA playoff milestones, proving that championship DNA is a powerful thing to carry from college to the professional stage.
Donte DiVontze's journey is defined by high-stakes transitions and remarkable efficiency. After a stellar collegiate career at Villanova—where he earned the 2018 NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player award and secured national championships in both 2016 and 2018—he entered the NBA as the 17th overall pick in the 2018 draft. His professional path has been a whirlwind of trades and transformations, moving from the Milwaukee Bucks, where he earned a championship ring in 2021, to the Sacramento Kings, Golden State Warriors, and New York Knicks.
DiVincenzo has carved out a reputation as a premier perimeter threat. During his tenure with the Knicks, he set franchise records for both single-game and single-season three-pointers made, including a staggering 11 three-pointers in a single game against the Detroit Pistons in March 2024. He also achieved an NBA playoff record by making nine three-pointers in a single Game 7 against the Indiana Pacers, a feat later tied by Buddy Hield in May 2025.
However, his career has been punctuated by significant physical setbacks. A fractured fifth metatarsal hampered his rookie season with the Bucks, and a severe left ankle injury sidelined him during the 2021 NBA Finals run. Most recently, during the 2025–26 season with the Minnesota Timberwolves, a torn Achilles in the first round of the playoffs threatened to derail his momentum. Despite these hurdles, his ability to adapt—from a high-scoring college star to a specialized sharpshooter—remains his defining trait.
