The explosive running back who rewrote the record books in a single championship game
In short: In the high-stakes arena of college football, few players have ever achieved such singular dominance. Donovan Edwards didn't just help lead the Michigan Wolverines to a national title; he executed a feat of scoring efficiency that hasn't been seen since the BCS era began.
Donovan Edwards' ascent through the ranks of Michigan football was marked by unprecedented statistical milestones. During the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship, Edwards achieved something unique: he became the first player in the history of the BCS-era playoff system to record two rushing touchdowns of more than 40 yards in a single national championship game. His performance, which included 104 rushing yards and touchdown runs of 41 and 46 yards, was instrumental in Michigan's victory over the Washington Huskies. This feat made him a standout alongside teammate Blake Corum, as the pair became the first duo in playoff history to both exceed 100 rushing yards in a national title game.
His collegiate career was defined by both individual accolades and team success. A standout at West Bloomfield High School, where he tallied 1,502 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns as a senior, Edwards arrived at the University of Michigan as a five-star recruit. He accumulated more than 3,000 yards from scrimmage and 25 touchdowns throughout his time, contributing to the Wolverines' 2023 national title and three straight Big Ten trophies. Before his collegiate fame, he was recognized as the Michigan Gatorade Player of the Year and a captain of the Detroit Free Press Dream Team. His football lineage also includes his grandfather, Charlie Primas Jr., who earned the title of Michigan Mr. Basketball in 1950.
Beyond the scoring, Edwards' impact was felt in high-pressure moments against perennial rivals. During the final months of 2022, two huge fourth-quarter scoring drives of 75 and 85 yards helped Michigan defeat Ohio State 45-23. While his professional journey has seen him move through various NFL rosters—including stints with the New York Jets, Washington Commanders, and Miami Dolphins—his legacy remains anchored in his historic championship performances. His 2022 campaign also saw him earn the Big Ten Championship MVP award after a strong performance against Purdue. Even as he transitioned to the professional ranks, his early career included being selected as a cover athlete for EA Sports College Football 25.
